A Valley Edged by Fire Country
Hydroseeding in Simi Valley is as much about the hills as the lawns. The Santa Susana Mountains rise to the north and the Simi Hills to the east and south, and the city is in a high-risk area for wildfire. The 2003 Simi Fire burned about 108,000 acres, and a 2005 fire was estimated at about 17,000 acres on September 29 of that year. When the brush burns off those slopes, the soil underneath is exposed to the next rain.
After a fire
On burned or cleared slopes we spray hydromulch with a tackifier or a bonded fiber matrix to give the surface cover right away, then add a seed mix suited to the slope. Wattles across the contour slow water down, and silt fence at the bottom catches what still moves. The goal is to get through the first winter without rills turning into gullies.
Seven dry months
Precipitation stays under an inch a month for seven months, April through October, and February is the wettest month at about 4.8 inches. Seed sprayed in early fall has the best chance of rooting before the rain arrives in force. Spring seeding can work but needs irrigation through the long dry stretch.
Big day-night swings
Summer temperatures in Simi Valley can swing as much as 38 F between day and night, with July highs around 96 F. Young grass handles that better with a mulch layer to buffer the soil surface, which is one reason we favor hydromulch over dry broadcasting for new lawns here.
Ranch land turned tract homes
Through the 1950s the valley was grazing land and grain fields, with barley the main crop. Tract housing began in 1957 and 1958 and grew fast after 1960. Many of those yards now have tired turf on compacted soil. Lawn renovation, aeration, topsoil and overseeding bring them back without starting over.
Drainage and creeks
The valley drains through Calleguas Creek, which starts in the Santa Susana Mountains. Graded sites need sediment control so mud stays out of that system. Our crew sets up silt fence, protects storm inlets, and sprays seed on the disturbed ground after the grading is done. Reach us at (213) 451-4997. Get a free estimate

Simi Valley Questions
How soon after a fire should a slope be treated?
Before the first significant rain if possible. Bare burned soil erodes quickly, so cover goes on first and seed establishes over the winter.
Is it worth renovating a 1960s lawn instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the soil is reasonable, aeration, topsoil and overseeding are cheaper than a full replacement.
What month is best to hydroseed in Simi Valley?
Early fall for most lawns and slopes, so the seed is up before the winter rains and the dry season is months away.
Do wattles and silt fence stay after the grass grows?
Silt fence usually comes out once the ground is stabilized. Biodegradable wattles can stay and break down in place.
