Seeding Rolling Hill Country

Hydroseeding in Chino Hills deals with terrain first. Much of the city is undeveloped rolling hills, and the western border is open hill country. Before the mid-1970s the area was mainly rural, used for horses and dairies. Housing expanded rapidly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the population grew from 27,608 in 1990 to 78,411 in 2020. Those subdivisions were cut into hillsides, leaving many graded slopes between homes.

Landslide-prone ground

Carbon Canyon Road, State Route 142, is prone to landslides. Private slopes face smaller versions of the same problem: rain on bare or thinly covered soil starts rills, and rills grow into slumps. We repair small failures, regrade the face, and then protect it with a bonded fiber matrix spray or rolled blankets before seeding.

Fire-wise landscaping

The city has had the Freeway Complex Fire and the Canyon Fire, driven by dry conditions, strong winds and dense vegetation, and it encourages defensible space and fire-resistant landscaping. On slopes near homes we use low-growing, fire-resistant seed rather than tall grasses that cure into fuel by summer.

Faults and fills

The Chino Fault runs along the eastern edge and the Whittier Fault lies to the west; the 2008 Chino Hills earthquake was magnitude 5.4. Hillside tracts here have plenty of fill slopes. Keeping water off those slopes, through working drains and controlled irrigation, matters as much as the seed.

Weather pattern

July averages about 89 F for a high and the summer months see almost no rain, while February is the wettest at about 4.1 inches. We schedule slope seeding for early fall.

Chino Hills Questions

Part of my slope slumped last winter. Can you fix it?

For small surface failures, yes: regrade, cover with bonded fiber matrix or blankets and reseed. Deep failures need an engineer first.

What is a fire-resistant slope mix?

Low-growing species that stay green longer and do not build up tall dry fuel. We avoid tall annual grasses near homes.

Why do drains matter for seeding a slope?

Water pouring over the face from a blocked drain washes out seed and mulch and can start a slide.

Do you seed lawns in Chino Hills too?

Yes. Flat yards get standard lawn hydroseeding after soil prep and grading.
