Living Above the Arroyos

Hydroseeding in La Canada Flintridge is shaped by elevation and drainage. Neighborhoods climb from about 970 feet near Devil's Gate Dam to about 2,400 feet at the highest streets, with city limits reaching 3,440 feet along Mount Lukens Road. Most of the city drains southeast toward the Arroyo Seco, and the western side drains south through Verdugo Canyon toward Glendale. Every yard sends water somewhere, and that decides where we put erosion control.

Mudslides follow fire

After the 2009 Station Fire, the loss of chaparral was followed by mudslides in 2010 that damaged homes next to arroyos on the northern edge of the city. The city is a very high fire hazard severity zone, and in January 2025 nearly the entire city was evacuated for the Eaton Fire. For arroyo-side and upslope properties, soil cover on bare slopes before winter is the most important thing we do.

Mountain-boosted storms

The city averages 21.09 inches of rain a year, with January through March each above 4 inches. Atmospheric rivers can produce intense foothill runoff because the San Gabriel Mountains squeeze more rain out of storms. The December 1933 and January 1934 Crescenta Valley flood severely hit the La Canada Valley. We use heavier mulch rates, bonded fiber matrix or blankets on slopes here, not a light lawn mix.

Live oaks everywhere

California live oaks remain common across the city. They do not like summer irrigation or grade changes over their roots. We keep turf out from under them and seed those areas with low-water cover or leave them mulched.

Lawns where they fit

Flat areas on these lots can carry a good hydroseed lawn. We loosen and level the soil, add topsoil where it is thin and seed in early fall. Summer highs near 91 F in August mean spring seedings need steady watering.

La Canada Flintridge Questions

My house is next to an arroyo. What erosion control do I need?

Usually cover on any bare slope, wattles where water concentrates and silt fence or similar at the low edge. We look at how water reaches the arroyo first.

Is hydromulch strong enough for foothill storms?

Light mulch may not be. We use heavier rates, bonded fiber matrix or blankets on slopes here.

Can I have a lawn near my live oaks?

Keep turf outside the oak canopy. Inside it, low-water cover or mulch is safer for the tree.

When should slopes be covered after a fire?

Before the first big storm. Mudslides after the Station Fire showed how quickly bare slopes fail.
