Bare Dirt, New Homes and a Dry River
Hydroseeding in Santa Clarita often begins on a lot that was graded only months ago. Housing units in the city rose from 62,055 in 2010 to 78,586 in 2020, and builders such as Lennar, Tri Pointe Homes and KB Home have put up neighborhoods including West Creek, Skyline Ranch, Vista Canyon and Five Knolls. New backyards here are usually compacted pad soil, and that is the first thing we deal with.
Fixing builder pads before seeding
Grading crews compact building pads for good reason, but grass roots struggle in them. We rip or till the top few inches, add topsoil where the pad is mostly subsoil, and fine-grade the pad so it sheds water away from the foundation. Then a hydroseed lawn goes down in one pass, with mulch, seed and starter fertilizer in the same slurry. It costs less than sod for a large backyard and fills odd shapes around slopes and planters.
A river that wakes up in storms
The Santa Clara River crosses the city east to west. It is usually dry, but it carries significant surface flow during heavy rain. Bouquet, San Francisquito, Sand and Soledad canyons were cut by its tributaries. Lots that back onto those canyons tend to have steep rear slopes, and those slopes need erosion control, not just grass.
Slopes behind the fence
On manufactured slopes we use hydromulch with a tackifier, or bonded fiber matrix where the grade is steep, and we can add a native or drought-tolerant seed mix so the slope does not depend on daily irrigation. Builders working near washes and canyons need silt fence and sediment control during construction; we install it and seed the disturbed ground once grading is done.
Heat is the real test
At the Saugus station the valley averages 15.5 inches of rain a year, with February the wettest month at 4.8 inches and no measurable rain in June, July or August. Summer highs average 90 to 95 F. A lawn seeded in fall gets the winter rain to root in. A lawn seeded in June needs a reliable irrigation plan from day one.

Santa Clarita Questions
My new-build backyard is hard as concrete. Can you seed it?
Yes, after we loosen the top layer and add topsoil where needed. Seeding straight onto a compacted pad usually gives a thin, patchy lawn.
Do you seed the slope behind my house too?
We can treat it with hydromulch or bonded fiber matrix and a drought-tolerant mix so it holds soil without needing lawn-level watering.
Is a summer hydroseed lawn realistic with 95-degree days?
It is possible with steady irrigation, but fall seeding is easier and cheaper to keep alive because the winter rains help.
Can you work for a builder on a tract near a wash?
Yes. During construction our crew puts up silt fence, guards storm inlets and handles other sediment control, then hydroseeds the common areas and basins once building wraps up.
