Hills, Wind and a Concrete Wash

Hydroseeding in Glendale has to reckon with wind. Santa Ana winds blow once or twice a year between October and December and can reach 70 mph, with gusts up to 100 mph in mountain passes and canyons. That is the same season many people want to seed a cool-season lawn. A fresh seedbed with no mulch can dry out in a day of Santa Ana wind, so we always use tackified hydromulch here and keep an eye on the forecast.

Foothill neighborhoods

Most of Glendale sits in the Verdugo Mountains region, with an official elevation of 522 feet and neighborhoods that climb into the hills. Hillside lots usually have a terraced yard and a steep bank. The bank gets erosion control, often bonded fiber matrix or a blanket with a drought-tolerant mix. The terrace gets lawn seeding on loosened, leveled soil.

Faults under the yard

The Sierra Madre, Hollywood, Verdugo and Raymond faults run through or near the city. The 1971 San Fernando earthquake produced surface ruptures nearly 12 miles long, and 31 Glendale structures had to be demolished. For lawn work that mostly means old retaining walls and patched grades. We check that drainage runs away from walls before we seed.

Verdugo Wash and the river

The WPA channelized the Verdugo Wash between 1935 and 1937, and the Glendale Narrows of the Los Angeles River run along the city. Storm runoff from yards and construction sites heads straight into these channels. We install silt fence and inlet protection on grading jobs to keep sediment out.

Rain that varies a lot

The climate table puts annual rain at about 17 inches, but wet El Nino years can top 30 inches and dry La Nina years can fall under 10. Frost can occur at night from late November to early March. We plan seeding windows around that range rather than an average.

Glendale Questions

Will Santa Ana winds ruin a new hydroseed lawn?

They can dry it out quickly. Tackified mulch and extra watering during wind events help, and we avoid spraying right before a forecast wind event.

Can you seed a terraced hillside yard?

Yes. Flat terraces get lawn seed and the banks between them get erosion control with a slope-appropriate mix.

Does a Glendale ADU build need silt fence?

If grading leaves bare soil that can wash to the street or a drain, it is a good idea and often a permit condition.

When is frost a risk for new seed in Glendale?

Night frost can occur from late November to early March, so we prefer early fall seeding for cool-season lawns.
