Foothill Yards, Fire Memory
Hydroseeding in Calabasas takes place in the foothills of the Santa Monica and Santa Susana Mountains, at about 928 feet in the southwestern corner of the San Fernando Valley. Lots here often mix a flat lawn area with a slope that climbs toward chaparral. Each part needs a different treatment, and we price and plan them separately.
What Woolsey taught
The 2018 Woolsey Fire damaged Grape Arbor Park, including its landscaping and irrigation, and the city finished rebuilding it in 2020. A yard hit by fire can face the same problems: burned irrigation lines, scorched turf and slopes with nothing left holding the soil. Re-establishing a yard after fire means fixing irrigation first, then regrading and seeding, then covering slopes with mulch or blankets before rain.
Weather that favors fall work
Calabasas averages 17.77 inches of precipitation a year, with February the wettest month at 4.65 inches, and June through August average 0.07 inches or less. Mean highs reach 92 F in July and 93 F in August. A lawn seeded in late September or October roots in during cooler weather with rain on the way. A lawn seeded in July fights heat and needs careful watering several times a day.
Protected open space
Under Measure D, approved in 2005, any city-designated open space needs two-thirds voter approval before it can be redesignated for another use. Many homes back onto that open space. On the transition slope between a yard and the hillside, we lean toward native seed and hydromulch rather than turf, which reduces water use and fits the setting.
Small lots, careful access
Hillside streets and gated neighborhoods can be tight for equipment. Hydroseeding helps because the hose can reach a hundred feet or more from the truck, so we can seed a back slope without driving onto it. That also means less compaction on soil you just paid to loosen.

Calabasas Questions
Our irrigation melted in the fire. What comes first?
Irrigation repair. Seeding before the water system works wastes seed, because new grass needs consistent moisture in the first weeks.
Can the hose reach a back slope from the street?
Usually. Hydroseeding hoses reach well beyond the truck, so we often seed slopes without driving equipment onto them.
Should the slope by the open space be grass?
We usually suggest a native mix with hydromulch there. It holds soil, uses less water and blends with the hillside.
Is late summer too hot to seed in Calabasas?
It is risky with highs in the 90s. Late September or October is a safer window.
