Grass Under a Big Canopy

Hydroseeding in Claremont often happens in the shade. The city calls itself the City of Trees and PhDs, has been a Tree City USA for 22 consecutive years and has planted street trees since incorporating in 1907. Indian Hill Boulevard near Memorial Park is lined with American elms, one of the few places in North America with elms that have not been exposed to Dutch elm disease. Lawns under that kind of canopy need a different plan.

Shade-tolerant mixes

Most turf wants several hours of sun. Under mature trees we use shade-tolerant fescue blends, seed at the right rate for the light available and avoid heavy fertilizer that pushes weak growth. We also tell owners honestly where grass will not hold and suggest mulch or ground cover there instead.

Protecting tree roots

Grading and new topsoil over tree roots can harm the tree you are trying to grow grass under. We keep fill shallow inside the drip line and level low spots gently rather than regrading the whole yard. Hydroseeding helps because it goes on without heavy equipment driving across the root zone.

Foothill lots in the north

Citrus groves and open space once covered the northern part of the city and have been replaced by large residential developments. Stone Canyon Preserve, begun in 2003, is one of the last tracts in the north. Nearby, the 1,740-acre Wilderness Park, created through an agreement between Claremont and Pomona, borders foothill homes. On those lots, slopes get erosion control and native seed that fits the hillside, while flat areas get lawn.

Seasons

Claremont averages 17.32 inches of precipitation, with 4.76 inches in February and none in July. Late spring brings May Gray and June Gloom, which can help a spring seeding by keeping the surface from drying too fast. Summer highs in August average about 92 F.

Claremont Questions

Can hydroseed grow under my big street tree?

With a shade-tolerant blend, partial shade works. In deep shade we will tell you honestly that grass will struggle.

Will adding topsoil hurt my trees?

Heavy fill over roots can. We keep any added soil shallow under the canopy.

Does June Gloom help new grass?

It can, by slowing surface drying. You still need regular watering until the lawn is established.

What goes on a slope next to the Wilderness Park?

Typically a native mix with hydromulch, which fits the hillside and needs little water once established.
