More Rain Than the Basin, Less Than You Think
Hydroseeding in Pasadena has one advantage over much of the region: rain. The city averages 20.08 inches a year, about 6 inches more than nearby Los Angeles, because the San Gabriel Mountains force storms upward. The catch is that the rain comes in bursts. The record for one day is 7.70 inches on March 2, 1938, and February 1980 brought 19.70 inches in a single month. Seed and soil need protection from storms like that.
Mulch rate matters
On flat lawns a normal hydromulch rate is enough. On sloped yards, terraces and the edges of the Arroyo Seco, we increase the mulch rate and add tackifier so an intense storm does not wash seed downhill. Where the grade is steep, an erosion control blanket goes under or instead of the spray.
Eaton Fire recovery
In January 2025, portions of Pasadena were destroyed in the Eaton Fire, which burned 14,021 acres. Once debris removal is complete, lots need regrading, new topsoil in many cases and a cover crop or lawn. We can seed cleared lots to hold soil while owners plan a rebuild, then come back for a permanent lawn later.
Six dry months are possible
Rain is sparse from May through October, and the city can go six months without measurable precipitation. A Pasadena lawn seeded in fall makes use of the wet season; one seeded in spring needs a full irrigation plan for summer.
Long gardening history
The Indiana Colony settled along the Arroyo Seco in 1874 and funded itself through a citrus growers association. Older Pasadena yards often sit on soil that has been amended and replanted for a century, with mature trees casting heavy shade. We adjust seed mixes for shade, and we level and overseed old lawns rather than tearing out everything when the soil is still good.

Pasadena Questions
Does Pasadena's extra rain mean I can skip irrigation?
Only for a fall seeding in a normal winter, and even then dry spells happen. Plan on watering, especially from May to October.
Can you seed a cleared lot after fire debris removal?
Yes. A temporary cover seeding holds soil and dust until you are ready to rebuild and landscape.
My lawn is under big old trees. Will hydroseed grow there?
With a shade-tolerant mix and some thinning of the canopy if possible. Deep shade limits any grass.
How do you keep seed from washing off a sloped yard in a big storm?
A heavier mulch rate with tackifier, and blankets on the steepest parts.
