Lawns and Paddocks in the East Valley

Hydroseeding in Burbank covers more ground than most people expect, from flat valley-floor lawns to foothill slopes below the Verdugo Mountains to horse properties in the Rancho Equestrian District. Elevations run from about 500 feet in the lower valley to about 800 feet near the mountains, and the work changes with them.

Horse properties

The Rancho area's equestrian zoning allows horses on residential lots, and stables and stalls are common. Paddock edges, trail shoulders and turnout areas take a beating. We regrade and reseed worn areas with tougher grass mixes and use erosion control on banks along trails so hoof traffic does not start gullies. Timing matters, since horses need to stay off new seed for several weeks.

Rock under the hills

The Burbank area is mainly sedimentary rock, sandstone, siltstone and shale, uplifted and folded. Foothill lots can have thin soil over rock. We often bring in topsoil before seeding so roots have somewhere to go, and we use hydromulch with tackifier on any slope that is regraded.

Dry summers, deep water table

At the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, July and August each average 0.01 inches of rain, and mean highs approach 89 F in August. Most of Burbank has a water table more than 100 feet down, so a new lawn depends entirely on irrigation through summer. Fall seeding, with February's rain averaging about 4 inches at the airport, makes establishment much easier.

Drought history

David Burbank started a sheep ranch here in 1867, and a drought in 1886 killed about 1,000 of his sheep for lack of water and grass. Dry years still come; the 2013 to 2014 water year brought only 5.37 inches. We favor drought-tolerant turf blends and help owners shrink lawn areas where it makes sense.

Burbank Questions

How long do horses need to stay off a reseeded paddock?

Usually several weeks until the grass is established and has been mowed at least once or twice. We will give you a timeline for your mix.

My foothill yard has rock just under the surface. Can grass grow?

With added topsoil, yes. We spread and grade topsoil first so the lawn has enough root depth.

What grass handles Burbank summers with less water?

Drought-tolerant turf blends do best. We can also suggest shrinking the lawn area and seeding the rest with low-water cover.

Can you regrade a worn trail edge on my property?

Yes, along with erosion control so hoof traffic does not start new ruts.
